DELEGATE: Tell us more about yourself
(Gerra Chong, Founder of Love Beauty Society)
I am a restless spirit and curious soul. Initially, I graduated with a Diploma in Optometry and worked in the industry for 5 years before deciding that it was not what I saw myself doing for the rest of my young life. So I decided to venture out into hair school and self taught makeup. I’ve been enjoying the process ever since.
D: How did you get the idea or concept for your business?
I stumbled across someone who was in the industry doing events who needed extra help in makeup and hair. From there my exposure grew. To crazy model shows and photoshoots. That’s where I got the hang of the industry and eventually e-commerce shops found me too. It was kind of a trend and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to meet and know more people.
D: What is your vision/mission for your company?
I would like to envision my company as a platform that encompasses creative individuals and myself to be more involved in the brainstorming of art creations. For e.g concept photoshoots for the more adventurous and fun couple/people. Or commercial campaigns for relevant corporate sectors. It keeps me inspired and excited.
D: How did you start it? What were some adversities you faced when starting it?
I didn’t get the full support from my family then. I just strived ahead with my determination and stubborn personality. And of course the fear of getting stuck in the mundane rut of restrictive work made me look forward and not backward
As well with a lot of faith, I told myself I had nothing to lose anyway.
D: What is something we might not know about the industry you’re in?
It is not always as pretty as it looks. The industry can get quite competitive and it is a bitchy bitchy world.
So far, thankfully I haven’t had much problems in my years of work. You just have to learn to avoid these things.
D: What has been the most memorable experience for you so far in running your business?
The new experience of working on different faces. Never knowing what kind of people you will get to meet each time keeps me on my toes.
My most memorable event was when I had the opportunity to be involved in Formula 1 for two years. It was really fun with the loud roar of the race cars and laughter and madness backstage.
D: How do you define success? Who do you see as successful?
Success is having the freedom to do what you love and not seeing it as a chore. Of course the bonus of success is making more money. But ultimately it is having the option to choose.
D: Which habits of yours have gotten you to where you are today?
My endless and restless spirit. The unwillingness to live a clichéd and mundane life.
D: What is one thing you would like your customers to know about your company?
I value customer satisfaction but apart from that I really hope that we can be more open and embrace creation. Life’s short. you gotta try anything worth trying once.
So let’s start with colours shall we?
D: If you could give advice to fellow and budding entrepreneurs, what would it be?
