In this post, we spoke to Kelvyn, co-founder of Mealthy, to find out more about him and Mealthy.
Delegate: Tell us more about Mealthy and your vision/ mission for the company?
Kelvyn: Mealthy combines 2 words—Healthy and Meal. So the first impression people have when they see “Mealthy” is that of a healthy meal. Our slogan “Gym out of the Gym” highlights that with our Mealthy meal sets, you can move towards your goal even if you are not exercising in the training centers.
Our mission is to provide precise, planned and plain meal preps to customers by convenient, quick and affordable means. Mealthy also informs customers about the nutrition they have in every meal and how it can help them to achieve training goals. Lastly, we want to educate Hong Kong people about the important of a healthy and clean-eating lifestyle.

D: Tell us more about yourself?
Kelvyn: I was super skinny when I was in secondary school. At that time, I only weighed 120 pounds though I was 1.75m tall. I got Pneumothorax when I was in high school. This disease usually happens to those who are tall and skinny. So, I decided to gain weight by going to gym.
However, despite going to gym almost 5 days a week, I didn’t see any changes in my body. After doing some research, I realised that my diet was why I couldn’t gain weight even though I train hard. I started to realise the importance of nutrition intakes for a gym-goer. Since then I prep my daily meals and calculate the macros according to the overseas professional trainers.

D: How did you start your business? What were some adversities you faced when you first started out?
Kelvyn: I started Mealthy Meal Preparation Service in September 2015 with my partner Joel. We have known each other for more than 20 years. How old are we? Haha… still very young anyway.
We came up with this business idea together in a gym. Both of us knew the importance of nutrition intakes for a gym-goer but we couldn’t find any meal prep companies in Hong Kong then. Also, some of the self-proclaimed healthy food providers only provided salad or juices which may not be suitable for professional trainers or athletes.
Hence we started to do research in June 2015 and soon we quit our jobs to set up a meal preparation company in Hong Kong.
As both Joel and I were not from the food and beverage industry, it took quite some time for us to set up a food factory and to hire employees. We spent considerable money and time on developing our own ordering system, designing menu, ingredients sourcing, training staff etc. We are very blessed that we have many families and friends who were willing to help us set up our company.

D: What is one thing you would like your customers to know about your company?
We are a result-oriented meal preparation company. Be it to lose fat, keep fit or gain muscles, Mealthy is always your first choice. We serve meal preps for the best bodybuilders and weightlifters in Hong Kong, for example, Adriana Gonzales (IFBB Pro), James Stokes, Clara Wong, Alexander Lam, Hyomin Cheung, and Tyler Man, etc. If the best chooses Mealthy, what would be your choice?
D: In your own words, starting your own business is…
Kelvyn: Like climbing a mountain. Before you start your trip, you must know your goal. Plan your route (Business Model), prepare your food and drinks (Investment), bring your map and compass (Business Advice), and walk it (Execution). On your way to the top of mountain, there are many things you can’t expect, such as bad weather, slippery surfaces and snakes. You have to either overcome these or turn back. Facing ups and downs are inevitable but your attitude is the most important to your business. If you choose to turn back and go home, you will never know how beautiful the view from the mountaintop is. If you choose to keep going, you have to stand firm no matter how bad the situation is.
D: What was your first job?
Kelvyn: I worked as a copywriter in a social media company after graduation. I chose to work in a social media company as I studied Marketing in university and my graduate thesis was actually about social media influence. The job provided me with new insights that I could not learn from textbooks and also taught me how we can better manage and utilise social media in our business.
D: Which habits of yours have gotten you to where you are today?
One of the reasons why I entered into the meal prep business is because I love going to the gym. I feel great and satisfied when I see results in my body after training and eating right. I believe that once you see results, it becomes an addiction. When you see your body in a better shape, you will be motivated to train harder.
Also, as I like to prepare and cook for myself, it also makes me motivated to look for more healthy recipes for our clients.

D: What are your hobbies and passions outside of work?
Kelvyn: I love playing the guitar and I’m in a band. Playing musical instruments releases stress and being in a band means that I can share ups and downs with my buddies. The weekly band sessions when I was younger were actually one of the most enjoyable moments in my life. It’s harder to gather everyone in a band now as we all have families and work but we definitely meet up to make music when we have the time.
Besides playing the guitar, I also go to the gym 3 to 4 days a week and practice Thailand boxing once a week.
D: Top 3 things you would do with a friend who is visiting Hong Kong for the first time.
Sightseeing in Tai O, having a seafood dinner in Sai Kung and having a drink in Soho or Lan Kai Fong.
D: One quote that you live by?
Kelvyn: Keep going, never settle.
D: Any future plans in the pipeline?
Kelvyn: Currently our main sales channels are through the internet and out gym partner’s referrals. The market is getting increasingly competitive so we are planning to launch a new product and set up new sales channels. For example we are looking at setting up channels in gyms or supermarkets. Also, we will be collaborating with more gyms to hold some training and diet programs.
D: Where can we find out more about you or your business?
