DELEGATE: Tell us more about yourself
Hi, I’m Fiona and I founded Smittenpixels Photography. I am a feeler and I go where my emotions take me. I wear my heart on my sleeves when I shoot.
D: How did you get the idea or concept for your business?
It started when I made it a point to document everything in my life down that I could in the best way. It took the form of writing a diary and a blog, and it gradually moved into immortalising it with photographs. The first few subjects in life were the friends around me, and also setting up the tripod to document the weekend adventures of my then-boyfriend and myself. It became clear that I was moved by the most fundamental emotion of all- Love. Subconsciously, I realised I relied a lot of my memory of things and people from the photos I had taken even when I was 13. Yes, I sneakily took a 2megapixels camera to school to take photos of my friends. I turn to the pictures to remember things.
I wanted to make photographs for the pure purpose of making memories myself because all good things do come to an end, and I want to remember the way that I felt for as long as I can. Now, I photograph to make memories for others too.
D: What is your vision/mission for your company?
It is to create an authentic experience for the clients during the session that resonates with them; in turn making images that we hope evokes feelings in people when viewed.
D: How did you start it? What were some adversities you faced when starting it?
There isn’t an exact date for the birth of Smittenpixels but it started in year 2011. Well, the adversities were countless.. But personally, the most pressing issue I faced when I started out was that I had no money for my gears and had to take a couple of part time jobs to save up the money. And then spend it all again on new equipment and the cycle went on. It didn’t help that my parents were extremely unsupportive of my decision. It was a relatively painful period to tide through but it is all worth it now!
Fun fact: Smittenpixels wasn’t the intended name for the company in the beginning. As a student, it was the URL of my old blog, but subsequently everyone called and recognised me by it. Hence, the name when I decided to go full force into photography.
D: What is something we might not know about the industry you’re in?
The bad apples in the industry.
Having a good camera and lenses really does not equate to you being a photographer and sometimes people are not discerning enough to realise that. Yes there are a good whole lot of fun in it that I enjoy but this job title isn’t as easy as it seems to be.
D: What has been the most memorable experience for you so far in running your business?
Well, there are tonnes! Receiving ‘Thank You’ text messages from clients after a photoshoot and/or after receiving their pictures always gets to me. I get couples who couldn’t thank me enough and said it is their luck to have me as their photographer, or when they tell me that they walk away from the day feeling a lot more in love with their partner. It’s also amazing how I managed to get so many people to open up to me during the session, even people who seem hard to talk to in the beginning.
D: How do you define success? Who do you see as successful?
Success, to me, is being able to make a living out of your hobby, getting recognition for your work; yet staying ethical, grounded and true as a person. Never bite the hand that feeds you nor forget where you came from.
D: Which habits of yours have gotten you to where you are today?
Definitely the hard work and discipline behind everyday that people do not see or even understand.
D: What is one thing you would like your customers to know about your company?
We want to make honest pictures that are timeless and resonates for generations to come. Thus, we want to meet more like-minded people who believe in the style of our photography and values the depths of such moments that tugs at your heartstrings.
Real moments > pretentious pretty pictures.
D: If you could give advice to fellow and budding entrepreneurs, what wold it be?
Can I just reemphasise it’s hard work + discipline x100?
